Upon graduation, he joined the US Army on 8/30/1967. As a member of the 173rd Airborne he spent a year on search and destroy in the jungles of Vietnam. (1968 – 1969) Returning from Vietnam, he served as an NCO in Fort Lewis, Washington, where he fulfilled his tour of duty and received an Honorable Discharge.
That fall, he registered as a student at Dordt College, Sioux Center, Iowa. He graduated with a BA in Sociology/Psychology. While there, he met the love of his life, Ruth Goudswaard, while they were performing in a theater production. John enjoyed being in the great outdoors, up north, his backyard, on the lake, or in the woods. He loved planting and watching things grow. Through the years, John spent many hours on his motorcycle and on his boat. He also was an amazing cook, as many can attest to, since he always made large amounts, so he could share with others. In addition, John served as a deacon and youth leader at Covenant Presbyterian Church.
He will be missed by many for his joy of life, compassion, friendship, and willingness to spend time with others when they needed a hand.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to St. Jude's Hospital or to ASPCA organizations in John's name.
